Cresswell-Ogbonna-Reid-Tomkins - PL4-W3-D1-GD-7:0
We've looked rock solid when we have utilised our 3 CBs in a back four and we have also looked pretty dangerous at attacking set pieces. Jenkinson has done a fine job for us but Tomkins is a much stronger defender and this back four allows Cresswell to literally pour forward knowing the back four becomes a formidable back three.

Considering our excellent performances with this back four this season do you think Slaven will continue with it for Stoke?....

I hope so.

tomkins isn't a natural right back - you can tell he's a centre half playing there
but he's a good footballer and will get better if we decide he's first choice and train him up
he was blowing a bit yesterday with the extra work up and down the wings
but i agree with the OP - that's a very soild back line and we have the attacking midfielders (when fit) now not to be reliant on a wing back for assists

We looked solid but going forward Tomkins is gash! Can't cross a ball

I loved Ogbonna yesterday, was immense and the couple of times when he made tackles, won the ball, the player went flying and the ball ended up 40 metres up the pitch... nothing like an old fashioned tackle.

Tomkins was easily our worst player yesterday and clearly not a right back. Unfortunately he's probably still better than the Arsenal 3rd choice RB.

So, Alex V thinks an attacking right back is the key to breaking down the opposition.

I reckon it might have something to do with us missing Payet, Lanzini & Sakho?

The first thing you want from your defence is not to concede any goals, and when Tomkins has played there, we have looked a different beast, which is proved by the STATS. And although Jenkinson is better going forward, he has hardly made that much difference, has he? When we get our best attackers back, the goals will come.

I felt yesterday showed Tomkins' limitations as an option at right back. He just doesn't have the attacking instincts of Jenkinson. Although it maybe suits us when Collins is playing to have the more defensive option to cover for him. I think it's a fine option for games when we're looking to soak up pressure and hit on the break, but games like yesterday when it's up to the players to break down an opposition I feel it's the wrong option.

I would not want Jenks in this game. Collins in for Reid to batten down the hatches while we figure out our best current formation.

Collins to come in, or Tomkins to move back to CB and Jenks (gulp) to come in?

Typical!

Am I also the only one who thinks Ogbonna is a bit shaky? Feels like he has a mistake in him waiting to jump out and boot the ball directly to an oncoming forward.

Antonio has got pace to burn and is strong so he could cover for Tomkins if he does fancy a foray up-field. Tomkins isn't a disabled and I am sure he can cross a ball. We should leave him there and give him licence to go forward if he wants to.

Could be the making of Tomkins.

Because, to be fair, although he's never ;et us down he has made a couple of howlers this season and there is no way at the moment Ogbonna and Reid should be replaced.

Reid was great against Mancs but, for me, Ogbonna looks absolute class.

Got to love the fact that modern football has turned in to a pace fest.

Tomkins is a good right back and I'm sure we all remember when he first got in the team he played there a lot.

Don't get me wrong no defender wants to face people who are a lot faster than them but that part of the pitch is only so long. Obviously going to a lot of clubs and occasionally seeing their development sides shows that the club's are moving towards positional sense rather than pace.

Reid on Saturday was all about anticipation and position but he knew if he did miss it he had Ogbonna ready to sweep. I get the impression the other 3 are more confident when Tomkins plays rather than Jenkinson.

You're right. And especially against Stoke who do look very dangerous down the flanks. Keep it tight against them has to be the bottom line.

completely agree with OP. I don't see how go with anything different. I'd also add that song did well to provide cover for Cresswell too.

Would be interested to see how Jenkinson would do if pushed further up. Did well to nab the first goal against Palace and certainly does have the attacking mindset, just not so ideal when you need a defending full back!

Jenkinson has done a fine job for us? I hope you mean last season, because this season he has been the worst player on the pitch for us in most games!

Re: Cresswell-Ogbonna-Reid-Tomkins - PL4-W3-D1-GD-7:0
arsenal & chelsea did ok with this strategy comma. (a cole). quality threat from 1 wing (winger or full back) normally wins you more games than you lose.

as did the yids with their yid rabbit for a couple of seasons with 1 good winger. we tried the same with shit jarvis.
